天気予報はリスニング力アップに最適な教材です。概ね2～3分と放送時間が短く、限られた語彙の中で文章が作成されています。天気は主語をItとするなど定型表現が多いため、練習に向いています。
限られた時間の中で多くの情報を伝えるため、早口なことが多いのも特徴です。このスピードについていくことができれば、各種試験のリスニング問題など楽勝です。天気予報学習法の唯一の欠点はローカルであることです。天気予報の最後に地名や地域行事の他、「明日のジャイアンツのオープン戦は・・・」のように地元の野球チームの話題が出てきたりすることです。

Q：ハリケーンの名前はどうやって決まるのか？
A：米国立ハリケーンセンターはあらかじめアルファベット順の名前を付けている。以前はすべて女性の名前だったが、現在は男性の名前も均等に使われている。基本的には6年周期で使われるが、特に甚大な被害をもたらしたものについては、リストから除外し、永久欠番のように歴史に名を残すことになる。
